Smita Patil Biography
Smita Patil is popularly known for acting in art films like Manthan (1977), Bhumika (1977), Aakrosh (1980), and Chakra (1981).

PERSONAL DETAILS
Smita Patil was born on 17th October 1955 in Pune, India. Her father Shivajirao Patil was a Maharashtrian politician and mother Vidya Patil was a social worker.

Smita was actively involved in feminist issues and always worked for the betterment of women in the traditional Indian society. She did her schooling from a Marathi medium school. She graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

Smita had a love affair with the already married Raj Babbar. The actor divorced his wife Nadira Babbar and married her.

Prateek Babbar who played Aditi's brother in Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na is their son.

After this marriage Patil was criticed by the feminists and was called a home breaker.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Smita Patil Charitable Trust founded a school named Smita Patil Public School. The school is situated at the border of the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat and aims to provide education to the children of the rural area.

The actress was an excellent photographer.

CAREER
Smita Patil began her career on Doordarshan Pune as a news anchor. She was discovered by Shyam Benegal.

Her debut film was Mere Saath Chal(1974). Along with directors like Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, and Mrinal Sen, Smita has also worked with commercial directors like Raj Khosla, Ramesh Sippy, and B.R. Chopra. Her acting was appreciated by all.

In Shakti (1982) and Namak Halaal (1982) Patil was paired with superstar Amitabh Bachchan and she could successfully show her glamorous side. The most challenging role played by her was of Sonbai in Ketan Mehta's Mirch Masala. Sonbai was a strong, beautiful and intelligent villager whom an officer in the village lusts for. The actress gave a strong performance in Shyam Benegal's Bhumika (1977). This film was a great hit and won the National Film Award and the Filmfare Best Movie Award.

ACHIEVEMENTS
She won Filmfare Best Actress Award, National Film Award - Best Actress, and BFJA Best Actress Award for movies like Chakra (1982), Bhumika (1977), Arth (1984), and the BFJA Best Actress Award for Mirch Masala.

She was honoured with the Padma Shri Award in 1985.

DEATH
Smita Patel died when she was thirty one years old due to some complications while giving birth to son Prateek Babbar. On 13th December 1986, she gave birth and died just after 6 hours.
